The New Peace Movement

Last week, on the one-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine, an anti-war rally took place at the Lincoln Memorial.

The rally, called “Rage Against the War Machine”, was a joint effort from the progressive People’s Party and the Libertarian Party. Over the weekend, similar rallies took place in London and Berlin.

The rallies, along with polling showing declining support for the war, are signs of a growing peace movement in the West.

People marched in the ‘Rage Against The War Machine’ rally in Washington DC, expressing outrage at US involvement in the Ukraine conflict. The host of 'The Whistleblowers' show John Kiriakou observed the protest on location and spoke to the participants.

Organizers for the “Rage Against The War Machine” made three primary demands for ending the war in Ukraine, the foremost of which was to stop funding the war.

They also made several secondary demands relating to the American military-industrial complex, including freeing Julian Assange, abolishing the CIA, disbanding NATO, and accelerating nuclear de-escalation.

Opposing the peace movement is the political establishment, whose arguments in favor of the war have alternated between the philosophical and the pragmatic.

At the start of the war, media pundits assured the nation that Russia was the clear aggressor, and US aid for Ukraine was necessary to protect freedom and democracy throughout the world.

In recent comments, the White House has stuck to this line, painting US involvement as necessary to uphold American values.

The White House justification for the current war—promote freedom and democracy—echoes the rationale for invading Iraq in 2003

As the war has progressed, an official narrative of on-the-ground events has emerged that simultaneously describes Ukraine as winning the war (thereby negating calls for peace talks) and desperately requiring US aid to prevent Russia from launching a supposed campaign of European domination.

However, despite the pro-war establishment's best efforts to impose a uniform narrative on the situation, evidence has trickled out to complicate the picture, including:

  • The claim by former Israeli PM Naftali Bennet that Biden blocked a cease fire between Ukraine and Russia

  • The claim that the US backed a 2014 Ukrainian coup which overthrew pro-Russian President Victor Yanukovych, with involvement by Dick Cheney protege (and current pro-war US diplomat) Victoria Nuland

  • The acknowledgment by Nuland that the US operates biological research facilities in Ukraine and that she was "concerned about the contents of those labs falling into Russian hands"

  • Rejections by Democrat and neoconservative politicians to audit the nearly $50 billion in military aid sent to Ukraine so far

  • A 1997 speech in which Joe Biden acknowledges that NATO expansion would likely cause a “vigorous and hostile reaction” by Russia

A counter-narrative has emerged that NATO and US, not Russia, is the true aggressor

The biggest break for the anti-war movement came earlier this month when venerated reporter Seymour Hersh published an extremely detailed account of how the Biden administration worked with the CIA to sabotage the Nord Stream 2 pipeline between Russia and Germany—an alarming act of international terrorism.

There was an initial media blackout on the report before an ad hominem smear campaign kicked into gear to discredit Hersh.

Still, the news has slowly leaked out into the public, finding its way into online news outlets, European Parliament, and the UN Security Council.

In a viral exchange last week, House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries was confronted about the pipeline by independent journalist Jose Vega. Jeffries clearly tried to dodge the question before Vega was escorted from the premises.

I confronted @hakeemjeffries on the Nordstream 2 pipeline revelations. I asked him to inquire into whether or not is true and to hold @POTUS accountable. His response? Lets praise Biden on what a great job he's done and reaffirm our commitment to Ukraine.
