Twitter News Digest for the week of 5/17-5/23
Hey everyone!
This week’s news digest covers an AI-generated market crash, the debt ceiling, why Ron DeSantis is announcing his candidacy on Twitter, and a crazy attempt to blackmail Bill Gates. Don’t miss the memes at the end!
AI Crash, Debt Ceiling Drama
Monday morning, an AI-generated image of an explosion at the Pentagon caused markets to tumble, briefly wiping out $500B in the S&P’s market cap.
The photo was tweeted by a bogus account called “Bloomberg Feed.”
The incident will probably increase public awareness about the power of AI. Last week, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Congress he supported AI regulation: “we think that regulatory intervention by governments will be critical to mitigate the risks of increasingly powerful models.”
Afterwards, Twitter began labeling images with a “manipulated media” tag if they’re “likely to result in widespread confusion on public issues.”
